Dot to Dot, Nottingham, 30th May 2010

The bank holiday saw Bookmarks and Trumpets make its annual pilgrimage to Nottingham for Dot to Dot. Better organised than the Camden Crawl, and boasting a mixture of up and coming acts and recognised names, it once again proved to be a winner.

We kicked off proceedings with Fiction at the Bodega, whose energetic and angular punk-funk promised much, but delivered slightly less.

Despite a seriously overactive smoke machine Dead Confederates turned in a rifftastic performance at Rock City, proving there’s still life in the old grunge horse yet.

Blood Red Shoes got the crowd, and us, going. Their boy/girl, guitar/drums dynamic held up well and the tunes from the new album sounded good live.

D.I.Y. indie noiseniks Islet at the Pulse Bar were something of a revelation. Switching instruments at will, bobbing on and off the stage and at one point setting up a drum kit in the middle of the crowd, they were certainly entertaining. And the screaming. Oh the screaming. Their mix of rock/noise and the odd bit of spoken word was pretty eccentric, but there were enough flashes of musical genius in amongst the sonic mayhem to leave us waiting for their first full release with eager anticipation.

Wild Beasts were good, but left us feeling a little underwhelmed. Love the albums but their eccentric pop didn’t really translate live. Kind of wished we’d gone to see Liars instead.

Team Ghost injected a bit of Gallic charm to proceedings. With a definite hint of M83, their guitar driven, shoe-gazing dance pop was pretty dazzling.

The undiscovered gem of the day turned out to be Yuck. Featuring several ex-members of Cajun Dance Party and a drummer with a massive afro, their old school college rock, a la Pavement or a less arch Weezer, was an absolute delight.

Beach House had an awesome home-made set of rotating silver covered diamonds, and even switched the mirror ball on mid-set. That perfectly suited their dreamy mix of indie rock and pop and a charismatic performance from frontwoman Christiane Lagrand sealed the deal.

Los Campesinos! turned in a typically spirited performance at Nottingham Trent Students Union, and despite lead singer Gareth managing to break his microphone within 2 minutes they still delivered the goods.

Casiokids treated us to a mammoth hour-long set in the wee small hours. Coming on like the Norwegian Hot Chip, they had everyone dancing. And any band that makes prodigious use of a pineapple shaped maraca is ok in our book.

Lovely Stuff.  Not my words Michael, the words of Shakin’ Stevens.
